Understanding Yokohama's Weather

Yokohama is Japan's second-largest city by population and sits on the northwestern shore of Tokyo Bay, approximately 30 kilometers south of central Tokyo. This geographic position — coastal, bay-protected, and just far enough from Tokyo's densest urban core — gives Yokohama a measurably different climate from its larger neighbor. The difference isn't dramatic, but it's consistent. On summer afternoons, Yokohama is typically 2-3°C cooler than Shinjuku. On winter mornings, the bay moderates temperatures so lows rarely drop as far as inland Tokyo wards. If you commute between these cities, you've felt this difference.

Yokohama's climate is humid subtropical (Köppen Cfa), identical in classification to Tokyo and Osaka, but the maritime influence is stronger. The city wraps around a large natural harbor, and no point in central Yokohama is more than 8 kilometers from open water. This proximity to Tokyo Bay is the dominant climatic factor, moderating both summer heat and winter cold while contributing to higher humidity and more frequent fog events than Tokyo.

The Bay Breeze Effect

Tokyo Bay creates a localized sea breeze circulation that profoundly affects Yokohama's summer weather. On clear, hot days, land surfaces heat faster than water. Warm air rises over inland areas, creating lower pressure that draws in cooler marine air from the bay. This onshore breeze typically develops by late morning, peaks in mid-afternoon at 15-25 km/h, and provides genuine relief from heat.

The Minato Mirai district, with its waterfront parks and open harbor exposure, receives the full benefit. Temperatures here can be 3-4°C lower than Nishi ward, just 5 kilometers inland, on peak summer afternoons. The breeze also improves air quality by dispersing urban pollutants. For outdoor activities in July and August, Minato Mirai and Yamashita Park are materially more comfortable than inland locations.

However, the bay breeze has limits. It weakens significantly after sunset when the land-sea temperature differential disappears. Night-time temperatures in Yokohama remain high in summer (rarely below 25°C in July-August) because the bay water, having absorbed daytime heat, releases it slowly. And on days with strong synoptic-scale winds, the local sea breeze gets overwhelmed and Yokohama's temperature advantage over Tokyo diminishes.

Summer in Yokohama

Average summer highs in Yokohama are 28-30°C, approximately 2°C lower than central Tokyo. This difference is meaningful for outdoor comfort but doesn't eliminate the challenges of Japanese summer humidity. Relative humidity in July and August remains 75-85%, and the "feels like" temperature still exceeds 35°C on many days. The bay breeze helps, but it's not air conditioning.

The rainy season (tsuyu) affects Yokohama identically to Tokyo — same timing (early June to mid-July), similar rainfall totals (200-250mm for June). Post-tsuyu, Yokohama's coastal position brings slight advantages: breezes are more consistent, and afternoon thunderstorms are slightly less frequent than inland because the stable marine layer inhibits convective development.

Typhoon impacts on Yokohama are significant when storms track up Tokyo Bay. The funnel shape of the bay can amplify storm surge, and the city's extensive waterfront (Minato Mirai, Kannai, Isogo) is vulnerable to flooding. Typhoon Faxai in September 2019 caused extensive damage in Yokohama despite the city not taking a direct hit. Storm surge combined with heavy rainfall overwhelmed drainage in low-lying coastal wards.

Wind Tunnel Effects in Minato Mirai

Yokohama's landmark district, Minato Mirai, has a known wind problem. The cluster of skyscrapers — Landmark Tower (296m), Queen's Square, and surrounding high-rises — creates canyon effects that accelerate wind at street level. Gusts of 50-70 km/h are common at the plaza level on days when the regional wind speed is only 20 km/h. The Yokohama city government has installed windbreak structures and adjusted building orientations in newer developments, but the core area remains windy.

This has practical implications. In winter, the wind chill in Minato Mirai can feel 5°C colder than the thermometer reading. In summer, the same channeling effect can actually provide welcome ventilation — but it also creates unpredictable gusts that make umbrellas useless. If you work or visit in Minato Mirai, check wind speed in addition to temperature.

Winter in Yokohama

Yokohama's winter is milder than Tokyo's. January averages a high of 10°C and low of 2°C, similar on paper, but the frequency of extreme cold is lower. Yokohama rarely drops below 0°C, while inland Tokyo wards see light frost 10-15 nights per year. The bay water, with its high heat capacity, keeps coastal temperatures elevated.

Snow is exceptionally rare. Yokohama averages 1-2 days of snow accumulation per year, typically less than 2cm when it occurs. The city's last significant snowfall was in February 2014, when 10cm accumulated and paralyzed commuter rail for a day. The combination of rare snow and dense population means the city has limited snow-removal capacity. Even 3-5cm causes transport chaos.

Winter weather patterns are dominated by the Siberian High, but Yokohama's coastal position provides partial protection. Cold air from the northwest must cross the Kanto Plain before reaching the bay, and the water moderates its intensity. Overcast winter days with light rain are more common than clear, frigid conditions. January and February are the driest months, averaging 60-70mm each.

Fog and Marine Layer

Yokohama experiences more fog days than Tokyo due to its bay proximity. Spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) are peak fog seasons, when warm, moist air passes over the relatively cool bay water. Advection fog can reduce visibility below 500 meters, affecting the Yokohama Bay Bridge and port operations. Morning commuters in Naka and Nishi wards regularly encounter fog patches that clear by 9-10 AM.

These fog events are purely marine in origin and don't indicate precipitation. The sky can be completely clear above the fog layer. If our dashboard shows high humidity (85%+) with no precipitation and temperatures between 10-18°C in spring or autumn, fog is likely in coastal areas.

Yokohama vs. Tokyo: 30 Kilometers of Difference

The 30-kilometer separation between Yokohama and Tokyo creates consistent but modest weather differences. Yokohama is cooler in summer (bay breeze), milder in winter (marine moderation), foggier year-round (marine layer), and slightly more humid (bay evaporation). Rainfall totals are nearly identical — both cities sit on the same coastal plain and receive the same synoptic-scale systems.

The practical implication: if you commute from Yokohama to Tokyo, you'll notice the temperature rise as you travel north. The reverse commute offers slight summer relief. Many Yokohama residents cite the milder climate as a quality-of-life advantage over Tokyo, particularly for families with children who spend time outdoors.

Spring and Autumn

April and May are excellent in Yokohama. Temperatures range from 15-22°C, humidity is moderate at 60-65%, and the bay breeze keeps afternoons comfortable. The city's parks (Yamashita, Negishi, Sankeien) are at their best during this season. Cherry blossoms typically arrive in late March to early April, 2-3 days earlier than Tokyo because of the slightly warmer coastal microclimate.

October and November are similarly pleasant. October averages 21°C, November drops to 15°C. Autumn foliage in Yokohama's hillside parks peaks in late November. The marine layer fog can be a minor nuisance on early autumn mornings, but it typically clears by mid-morning.

Practical Recommendations for Yokohama

Summer: take advantage of the bay breeze. Plan outdoor activities near the waterfront (Yamashita Park, Minato Mirai, Osanbashi Pier) rather than inland. The temperature difference is real and significant. Carry a light jacket for air-conditioned trains — the contrast between 28°C outdoors and 22°C in rail cars can be uncomfortable.

Winter: a wind-blocking jacket is more important than heavy insulation for Minato Mirai visits. The wind tunnel effect amplifies cold. For inland Yokohama wards, standard winter layering applies. Snow boots are unnecessary — waterproof shoes handle the rare winter precipitation better.

Year-round: fog is the unexpected factor. If you're driving across the Yokohama Bay Bridge or visiting the waterfront on a humid morning, expect reduced visibility in spring and autumn. Ferry services occasionally delay departures due to fog, though this affects freight more than passenger services.
